Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 5 – Battle of the Titans

With the iPhone 5 finally out we can have ourselves a good old fashion standoff between Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. The prodigies of the two electronic giants seem to dominate the market at this time in terms of high end smartphones.

So let’s have a comparative look at them:

iPhone 5 got an upgrade to the screen size up to a 4 inches Retina display (1136×640 resolution) which makes the phone a little larger but the keyboard looks a little small for typing. Galaxy S3 comes with a 4.8 inches HD Super AMOLED screen (1280×720 resolution) which is a lot more generous with the eyes. However the phone is quite large which might not be the first choice for everybody. In terms of image quality I think we have a draw between these two: both look great.

The materials quality is a strong point of iPhone 5 which looks less plasticky. S3 doesn’t look as solid as the iPhone but you better use a case for any of them.

Galaxy S3 packs a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor (quad-core in the European version) which makes it faster than the A6 CPU in iPhone 5. I guess that the 2GB of RAM in S3 help also, as the iPhone 5 only packs 1GB of RAM.

Regarding the storage there are still no upgrades available in the iPhone. There are just the old 16, 32 or 64 GB levels of storage. The S3 has a micro-slot which allows up to 64GB next to the 16 or 32 GB standard levels. Both S3 and iPhone 5 have excellent 8Mp rear cameras allowing 1080p HD video but S3.s has the burst mode. The difference here is in the front camera: 1.9Mp on the S3 and just 1.2Mp on iPhone 5, both with 720p HD video capability.

The most debated subject between the two is as usually the OS. iPhone 5 comes with Apple’s latest IOS 6 while Galxy S3 got Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and a promise for an update to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Personally I find the Android 4.0 easier to work with, but that’s just me.

Both S3 and iPhone 5 come with a personal assistant feature who will answer any question you ask. Their names are SIRI on iPhone and S Voice on S3. None of them are perfect but they are a nice change from the common smartphone.

With regards to the battery life, S3 seems to a have a little more stamina than its rival but that depends a lot on how the phone is managed.

Bottom line is iPhone is catching up on its rival but it is still quite not there. If one has to choose between these two the final decision will depend on the phone size and the preferred OS.
I would go for Samsung Galaxy S3 anytime. 😉
